While the Commissioner of Inquiry, (COI) into the March 2 and March 3 disturbances at the Georgetown Prisons wrapped up its final session yesterday social activist Mark Benschop took to the streets calling the exercise a farceSocial Activist Mark Benschop mounts a protest outside the Ministry of the Presidency’s Department of Public Serviceand a waste of taxpayers’ monies.Benschop was scheduled to testify before the Commission on Friday but refused after he was informed it will be conducted in Camera. The social activist who served five years in the Camp Street jail for treason during the tenure of former President Bharrat Jagdeo said that he became suspicious after he was informed by the Chairman of the Commission, Justice James Patterson that his evidence will not be taken publicly.Benschop made it clear that he had not requested to have his testimony done privately. He said that he is convinced that the COI is seeking to cover things up.“You can’t have a public inquiry and something as serious as this and then say that you are going to be selective with regards to who testify in camera and who doesn’t,” Benschop said as he stood in front the Commission’s Ministry of the Presidency’s Department of Public Service, Waterloo Street, Georgetown Headquarters, yesterday.“It doesn’t smell right. Obviously they have something to hide. I want to talk what goes on behind prison walls…I don’t know what could be a threat to national security with someone talking about their experience,” he stated.Meanwhile inside the COI, Attorney for the Joint Services, Selwyn Pieters, made his final submission and few recommendations to the Commission towards the improvements of the prisons. During his submissions, Pieters recommended that a new prison facility be constructed since the current structure cannot accommodate the existing complement of inmates. He also noted it is important for Prison officers to be properly remunerated for their services.The Commission is expected to hand over the report to the government on or before May 31.The COI was ordered by President David Granger following one of the deadliest riots to take place within the prisons in recent years. Seventeen prisoners perished after a fire broke out in Capital Block A of the Camp Street jail.The President appointed Justice James Patterson, Merle Mendonca and retired Director of Prisons, Dale Erskine as Commissioners to oversee the work.The panel is expected to investigate, examine and report on the causes, circumstances and conditions that led to the disturbances on the morning of March 3,NFL Jerseys From China, 2016, that resulted in the death of prisoners and any other subsequent disturbances at the Camp Street Prisons; the nature of all injuries sustained by the Prisoners and any other subsequent disturbances. |
