“I feel as if a few of my numerous burdens have suddenly disappeared,” said Vilene Mc Leod, a Pomeroon mother of ten, after she became the owner of a Food for the Poor house, in the Onderneeming Sand, New Housing Scheme area.Vilene received that house almost three months after losing her three-bedroom house to fire in the Pomeroon on February 21, last. The new two-bedroom house,Cheap Jerseys 2018, which carries an external washroom and bath, was made through the efforts of the Regional Executive body of Region Two.According to the single parent, she recalled attending a barbeque, a mere two miles away from home when she received news that her house was on fire.A frantic Miss Mc Leod said she left for her home immediately, only to be greeted with the sight of fire emanating from one of her bedrooms. She said she desperately tried to rescue her six children who were asleep in the already enflamed building. She said as she entered the home she first called for her nine-year-old son, Anthony, and when she didn’t get any response she took off all of her clothing and proceeded further into the house, amidst the flames, while concerned neighbors formed a bucket brigade. Vilene said the fire service was also summoned but this yielded no result. In the end she recalled rescuing all of children and taking them to a safe place. To date, the Essequibo fire service’s report on the fire has been inconclusive.Vilene lost thousands of dollars in electrical and household equipment to the fire. She confessed to being very versatile and hard working, adding that she has plans to continue in her trade as a vendor. This will necessitate her making frequent trips to the Pomeroon where her farm is located. For the last 15 years Miss Mc Leod worked single-handedly each day for extremely long hours, cultivating and selling her own produce. From those revenues, she said, she constructed her now destroyed home.Vilene, who is yet to get accustomed to living on coastal Guyana, says it will be a something new and also a challenge. And because of her recent instability, another of her concerns is to get her children back in school.Miss Mc Leod, who has since received foodstuff, money and clothing from the Guyana Relief Service and from the Region Two Mother’s Union, has expressed its sincere gratitude. After the fire, Vilene and her children were rescued by one of her friends in Charity. She said she stayed at her friend for at least one month, before being rescued again by another family friend in Lima. She said although the house was dilapidated she couldn’t complain for it was far better than being on the road with her children. |
