– As RotaTeq vaccination also commencesWith the arrival of some 70,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine last week, the Ministry of Health yesterday commenced administering the drug. And two Ministers of Health – Drs Leslie Ramsammy and Bheri Ramsaran – were the first two to secure their doses, dispelling any concerns the wider population may have as it relates to taking the vaccine. However, although the vaccine will be readily available, not all those who desire to have it will be eligible at this point. According to Minister Ramsammy, the limited supply which comes as a donation from the Pan American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation will not be sufficient for the entire population, but rather to certain vulnerable groups.Through an identification process,NFL Jerseys Cheap, the Minister had revealed that about 160,000 persons will become eligible to receive the H1N1 vaccine. Among those will be approximately 100,000 children under five years old and about 50,000 persons living with other conditions, for which co-morbidity with the H1N1 virus may prove to be very serious and even fatal. The latter group, which represents persons with certain chronic conditions, was identified based on the Health Ministry’s observance of other countries’ experiences.Minister Ramsammy disclosed yesterday that he is presently negotiating with various countries to secure additional supplies of the vaccines. “The vaccine that we have right now in the country comes to us at a cost of about $72M and it order to mean our initial amount that we had planned (approximately 200,000) we will have to find another $100 M. So that is what I am working on right now.”Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health yesterday for the first time introduced RotaTeq, an oral vaccine administered to young children to prevent rotavirus. Two young children were the first to be exposed to the vaccine.According to the World Health Organisation, rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhoeal disease in infants and young children globally. It is estimated that the virus is responsible for approximately 527,000 deaths each year, with more than 85 percent of these deaths occurring in low-income countries, and over two million are hospitalised each year with pronounced dehydration.Children under five years of age, especially those between 6 months and two years are most vulnerable to the disease. As such the vaccine will be available to children under one-year-old who are more susceptible to the infection. The young children were also afforded Oral Polio Vaccine and a pentavalant injection containing five vaccines – Tetanus, Pertussis, Diphtheria Hepatitis B and Haemphilus B yesterday. In the past young children were forced to experience the pain of the five individual injections.Regarding the undertaking yesterday as a milestone step in the immunisation programme and as a major flagship initiative for the Ministry of Health in Guyana and health in the world, Minister Ramsammy lauded the support that has been directed to the ministry through various organisations and the commitment of his immunisation staff. |
