| Traffic ranks from the Guyana Police Force yesterday launched an investigation into a mid morning accident involving three cars at the corner of New Garden and Church Streets that left two men nursing injuries and extensive damages to three vehicles.The scene of the accident underlined the force of the collision and eyewitnesses said that it was a miracle that there were no fatalities.Terrence Clarke, who was driving a Toyota Carina 192, HB 3223, said that he was traveling south along New Garden Street, Queenstown, when he noticed a Toyota Carina wagon, PKK 7541 traveling from the opposite direction on Shivnarine Chanderpaul Drive.At the same time another vehicle, PHH 279, driven by Whitney Walton,NFL Jerseys Supply, was traveling east along Church Street. All three vehicles approached the junction simultaneously, but according to Clarke, the driver of the wagon failed to observe the stop sign at the junction of Church and New Garden Streets.He said the wagon careened into Walton’s car and then turned turtle. Clarke further said that following the collision, Walton’s car slammed into his vehicle. The front of Clarke’s car was badly smashed in and the radiator among other parts was extensively damaged.Walton’s vehicle was also badly damaged.She corroborated Clarke’s story saying that she was traveling at a sedate pace, east along Church Street when the driver of the Toyota Carina wagon dashed out of Shivnarine Chanderpaul Drive and into her path. The young woman said that she applied brakes but could not avoid the collision.Eyewitnesses related that the Toyota Carina Wagon flipped when it collided with Walton’s vehicle. They were amazed that the driver only sustained minor injuries.A public-spirited citizen took the driver of the Toyota Carina wagon, Hazihidin Mohamed, to the Georgetown Public Hospital.Kaieteur News spoke with Mohamed at the hospital as he awaited treatment. He had escaped virtually unscathed. His colleague, Nazim Khan, was with the doctors at the time.Mohamed complained of pains in his right leg and walked with a slight limp. The 37-year-old man debunked the charges made by the two other drivers that he had breached the major road.He said that there were three persons in his vehicle— Nazim Khan and another man who had begged him for a lift. Mohamed added that as he approached the junction of Church and New Garden Streets he slowed down in observance of the stop sign.He said that he had not yet pulled off when motor vehicle PHH 279 appeared out of nowhere and slammed into the side of his car. The man could not recall what happened next.He said his car went out of control and when the smoke cleared he realized that it had toppled over. As Mohamed stood in the waiting area of the hospital one of the police officers suggested that he go to the nurse’s desk to receive some attention.The man baulked at the suggestion stating that he is afraid of injections.Meanwhile, about four police officers arrived at the scene of the accident and commenced preliminary investigations. The Toyota Carina wagon suffered the worst of the damage and had to be towed away with a crash truck. When this newspaper left the scene the traffic ranks were preparing to tow the other two vehicles to the Brickdam Police Station to facilitate further investigations.Ms. Walton was placed into another vehicle which subsequently drove away. Her father, Ovid Walton, later said that his daughter was taken to hospital. |
