One Mile students are attending classes at three schools and one community centre in the district.Underscoring that an entirely new building plan was done for a new school, the Education Minister said this nullified the previous engineer’s estimate which was $60M.“The engineer’s estimate that they speak of is for a wholly different project from the one advertised before. When it was advertised before for $60M, this only catered for one block. And that was because regional officials were adamant they would rebuild the school and raised funds. This new engineer’s estimate is for the whole school. So naturally it will be bigger in amount.” “Government wisely scrapped the previous plan after realising that a large section of the residents would still be inconvenienced by having to travel far distances to attend schools that are overcrowded because of having to place this new number at those schools.”Previously, a Self-help Committee was established to oversee the rebuilding of the One Mile Primary School and donations were made by organizations and individuals to contribute to the rebuilding.Millions of dollars were collected and some form of rebuilding was done. The self help committee had estimated that their rebuilding effort would have cost $100M. That reconstruction started with concrete works being executed on the foundation and ground floor. Then works on the front wing of the building commenced. Works had also begun on the bottom flat and top floor.The Self-help committee had planned that when completed; the school would have two wings, and would include new features such as an Information Technology laboratory and staff room. It was expected that construction of the first wing would have concluded last September, for the new school year.
