Feasibility studies have commenced to have more agricultural lands available to farmers on the Essequibo Coast.Yesterday, Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, announced that some 5,000 acres in Aurora Village are being examined by technical personnel while more lands are being inspected to have the agricultural sector in the region expanded. The Minster was at the time addressing a gathering at Westbury, Essequibo Coast during the commissioning of a new $190M double-door sluice. The new sluice was constructed to support the current one-door sluice that was deemed insufficient to drain the residential and farm lands in the village and surrounding communities.Minister Persaud told the gathering that Guyana’s agriculture sector is currently at a ‘crossroad.’“Whilst we are at a crossroad, the prospects are bright for Guyana because we are very strong and we are a developing food and agriculture nation.”He said that if the situation is handled properly then there will be tremendous benefits, possibilities and opportunities for all farmers and people of Guyana.“Not only for rice but we are also aggressively perusing diversification on the Coast. Whilst rice is being the main agricultural activity there is also potential for other types of agriculture activity such as crops and livestock.”The sluice, construction of which was delayed by one month, was funded by the European Commission.Construction began in January 2007 with a deadline of sixteen months. The delay was as a result of necessary modification of the design combined with prolonged rainfall, John Lewis, a representative from the construction company stated.According to Lewis, the project was nonetheless completed within budget. The sluice can drain up to 6,000 acres of land at a calculated rate of 3.25 inches per day. Also addressing the gathering yesterday was Chairman of the National Climate Change Committee, Shyam Nokta.Nokta,Wholesale Jerseys, in highlighting the effects of climate change, said that Guyana has been witnessing less rainfall with more intense periods. Commenting on the new sluice in the area, Nokta said that it would provide tremendous relief to farmers along the Essequibo Coast.“It would allow for an expansion in agriculture production but more importantly it would also help to reduce the risk of flooding not only for agriculture but also for settlements in Region 2,” Nokta added. The old single-door sluice, in the area was constructed in the early 1960s as a part of the Tapacuma Irrigation Scheme. That pump, however, went out of use several years ago. |
