| OP: Country stands prepared to rebuff invadersFollowing Surinamese media reports over a planned military invasion in the late 90s of a part of Berbice, the Guyana Government in a sharp response said this country was and is prepared to rebuff invaders.On Tuesday, ex-President of Suriname, Jules Wijdenbosch, during Parliament, is reported in the media as saying that there were intentions to use the army of that country to enter Guyana to the New River Triangle area and remove Guyana’s army personnel who were there.This decision was highly contemplated by Wijdenbosch’s administration in the late 90’s during the last days of that government.The former President, who described the Guyanese army in the New River Triangle as “occupiers”, is reported as saying that with occupiers, one does not negotiate, one acts. Would be adventurists should know that the borders of Guyana are fixed, internationally recognised and inviolate,” OP said.On Friday, Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues, reportedly met with her Surinamese counterpart, Manorma Soeknandan, who denied knowledge of the former President’s statements and promised to make contact with her government for more information before any comments. |
