| The Georgetown Embassy of the United States of America is disputing statements made by the Ministry of Home Affairs linking the detained members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to espionage.On Wednesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs had rejected as false and unfounded what it said was a report purportedly originating from the Embassy of the United States of America to the effect that Missionaries belonging to the church have been asked to leave the country because they were engaged in espionage activities.But in interviews with the media that day, US Embassy Charge d’Affaires, Karen Williams declined to speculate what may have been the reason for the Guyana Government’s move. Yesterday in a press release, the Embassy said it had issued no reports, as alleged by the Home Affairs Ministry.“The Embassy’s communications with the Government of Guyana in the case of the U.S. citizen missionaries have been official and diplomatic and, as such, private and privileged. The Embassy has not,Hope Solo Jersey, and would not, issue or originate reports as indicated within that statement,” the release stated.On Wednesday about 40 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints were detained at the headquarters of the Police Criminal Investigations Department and were ordered to leave Guyana within 30 days.The Ministry of Home Affairs said that 50 Missionaries from the Church had over-stayed their time in Guyana and did not possess valid Work Permits since November 2004, April 2005, April 2007, January 2008 and March 2009 respectively. |
