Travelfish Malaysia travel forum
We're planning on flying to Langkawi from KL throughout mid May, then later on plan to head over to Thailand. The closest airport with regular flight tickets seems to be Phuket but the flights will not be that cheap so we are thinking a ferry is actually a better choice. We also hate soaring so we like to avoid it the place possible!
There seems to be disagreeing info on various websites concerning ferries from the Telaga Terminal some places say the ferries run once daily up until 31st May, other folks say the last ferry is definitely on 31st April.
Just wondered if anyone had knowledge of this journey in May well we don't want to fly within and end up stranded without Timberland Boots the need of option but to take the flight that is outside of our own budget.
I've never executed that trip myself nevertheless past March I was told through various travel agents on Lipe how the ferry to Langkawi stops Apr 30. These things do alter, and if they didn't extend the idea this year they might next year however realize that doesn't help you presently. I'm not sure on this (and don't sufficient to research it now, apologies!) but I imagine you can get a ferry to the mainland from Langkawi subsequently cross into Thailand throughout the Wang Prajan crossing, then make your way to be able to Satun and arrange transport so that you can Pakbara (main jumping off level for Lipe) from there. I imagine you could also go overland to Hat Yai then book a transfer all the way to Lipe from there. Again, unclear as I've never been to Langkawi, but it's highly likely that you could book a full transfer by way of land (including boarder crossing) so that you can Lipe from a travel agent on Langkawi. With any luck , someone will come along the following who can tell you for sure.
Nowadays, there is no ferry from Langkawi so that you can Lipe after April 30. That is partly due to weather conditions, but mainly because Thai immigration on Lipe shuts from April 30 for you to Nov. 18 so there would be no way to check travelers lawfully into Thailand. There's obviously talk that the immigration workplace will remain open year round from 2014 but we don't have any verification on that.
However, you will discover year round ferries direct coming from Kuah town on Langkawi to Satun in far southern Thailand. As far as I've been told, the ferry boat direct from Satun to Lipe flows only during high season, but it's not difficult to transfer by Satun to Pakbara some 60 kilometre north. From Pakbara, at least one speedboat flows to Lipe everyday at 2009:30 during low year or so, unless there's a big surprise.
Again, I imagine you could potentially book an all in switch to Lipe from a Langkawi travel business office. Otherwise, you could arrange it by means of On's Restaurant in the center of Satun town. Satun's a fantastic little town, by the way, worth a night if you can swing the idea.
In sum, it's fairly easily doable without going to Phuket. Lipe and Langkawi can be wet and quiet side in May well, but personally that might not stop me from likely. It normally doesn't rainwater all day and those quick tropical storms blowing in might be a thrill. Low season includes cheap beach bungalows.
