| A sailor received a most unpleasant birthday gift when he was remanded to prison by Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday.Godfrey Thomas was answering charges of embezzlement of $100, 000 entrusted to him by his employer, Latchman Narine.According to the charges read in court, Thomas, a sailor of 227 Wismar, Linden,Cheap Jerseys, between July 11 and July 13, last, embezzled the sum entrusted to him and converted it to his own use.The accused pleaded guilty to the allegations.Thomas told the court that on the day in question he had collected the cash from his employer but was unable to get to the city as was instructed to conduct business.He said that because there was a high tide, he was unable to cross the creek in the interior and as a result used $10,000 from the amount to pay for hotel accommodation and to have a few drinks with two friends.The accused indicated that he probably took too much alcohol and apparently fell asleep with his friends, since he awoke alone later to find that the remainder of the cash was missing.He told the magistrate that he was celebrating his 43rd birthday. His announcement sent titters of amusement rippling through the courtroom.“What a birthday,” the magistrate noted and remanded him to prison until he could come up with the cash.Since he asked for a week to accumulate the cash, he was remanded to prison for that period and will return for trial on July 23. |
