-purchased unregistered vehicleCorruption at the Guyana Revenue Authority’s Licence Revenue Office has resulted in the seizure of a Sports Utility Vehicle, leaving a businessman at his wits end to come up with $6.8M to pay the taxes. The businessman, Bhola Nauth, of Cummings Lodge, was under the impression that all was well with the vehicle he had purchased from another businessman for $2.9M, since it was being operated on the road for more than four years. But when he tried to resell the vehicle he ran into problems with the GRA.Kaieteur News understands that the vehicle, a Pajero wagon PJJ 3837 was brought into Guyana in 2005 and was owned by David Burgess, a former General Manager of Courts Guyana Limited and proprietor of the now resold Windies Sports Bar.Nauth said that some time in May this year he saw the vehicle being advertised for sale in a daily newspaper and he contacted Burgess with a view to purchasing it for his son.Arrangements were made and Burgess issued Nauth with all the relevant documents for the vehicle,Cheap Adidas Shoes Australia, including the Road Service Licence. This newspaper saw a copy of what appeared to be a genuine Road Service Licence which was issued this year. But last month Nauth decided to sell the vehicle since his son preferred a smaller one.He subsequently found an eligible buyer and there and then his troubles began.Proceeding to transfer the vehicle to the perspective buyer, he found out from the Licence Revenue Office that the vehicle was never registered. After contacting an attorney, Nauth requested further checks only to find out that indeed there were no registration records for that vehicle. In fact the registration number was that of a trailer. He subsequently got an audience with Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority, Khurshid Sattaur and requested further investigations.A few weeks later when he contacted Sattaur he was hit with the news that he had to pay $6M duty for the vehicle since it was imported illegally into Guyana.By then he found out that the person from whom he had purchased the vehicle had left the jurisdiction and there was no way he could contact him.On November 9 representatives from the Guyana Revenue Authority seized the vehicle and issued Nauth with a letter which stated that he had to pay $6,848,600 in taxes. The businessman is livid since he claimed that after doling out almost three million dollars for the vehicle, he should now pay for the negligence of the Guyana Revenue Authority.“This vehicle was being used in this country for so long and there is no control system to monitor same. This is not my fault and I am now the victim of corrupt practices which was ongoing at the GRA,” Nauth said.Several other persons have been in similar situations, with some being victims of established vehicle dealerships.
