| – each placed on $100,000 bail New charges were yesterday instituted against four male former Republic Bank employees, and a carpenter, when they appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.The men, Wilfred Macheo, 19, of Paradise, East Coast Demerara; Steven Gangadeen, 18, of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara; Deodat Narine Rampersaud, 21, and Saisnarine Rampersaud, 22, both of Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara and Manniram Behari, also of Grove Housing Scheme, are accused of defrauding Republic Bank over a million dollars.Yesterday present in court were Steven Gangadeen, Saisnarine Rampersaud and Deodat Narine Rampersaud, the others, according to their attorneys, were not summoned.The five men are accused of conspiring with person or persons unknown to commit a felony between April and May last. They allegedly withdrew large sums of money from Balram and Sheba Manmohan’s bank account. The men purportedly used a Republic Bank slip to withdraw the money.Attorneys at law Nigel Hughes,Cheap NFL Jerseys China,Vic Puran and Adrian Thompson represented the men. According to Hughes, his clients Saisnarine Rampersaud and Deodat Narine Rampersaud were previously charged and acquitted. He said that the prosecution had failed in an attempt to prove a case against them.He also noted that the facts which are now being produced were the same facts that the court is already familiar with. The lawyer posited that the only reason they brought his clients back was because of “pure malice”.Hughes further argued that Republic Bank was embarrassed that they lost the case. He noted that the police officers failed on numerous occasions to be present in court to build a case against his clients.He said that it is an ultimate disrespect that the relevant authority would file new charges.Vic Puran stated that all the defendants had a trial over the identical subject matter. The lawyer also noted that the magistrate has the jurisdiction and the right to prevent the process of abuse. Puran stated that the prosecution has compromised the case, further noting that advice must be sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions.Both lawyers said that their clients pose no flight risk and have always been present when the previous matters were called in court.The lawyers stressed the fact that their clients were reporting to the police station and never missed their obligation, further adding that they came voluntarily to court. The lawyers also asked that bail be granted in a reasonable sum.The prosecution did not oppose bail, but told the court that they were fresh charges that were laid against the defendants and also that they would be willing to prosecute the new mattersThe prosecutor also asked the magistrate that bail be set at a substantial amount. They were all placed on $100,000 bail and are expected to make their next court appearance on November 6. |
