Even as members of the Guyana Fire Service continue to investigate several recent fires, there was another addition to their list for investigations yesterday.A mid-morning fire destroyed a home at Swan Street, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, leaving seven persons homeless.Those homeless are Sherene Hamilton, her husband Orvin Smith, and their five children, aged nine years to four months.Hamilton told this newspaper that she had just secured her house, and was heading out towards the public road when she was alerted that there was a fire at her house.“I just walking out de street and a man tell me, ‘Girl, you house on fire’…so I turn and tell him, ‘Boy, rest youself and stop mekking joke! Me house can’t deh pon fire,’ ” Hamilton said.Hoping it was a joke the man was making, Hamilton said, she turned around, only to see her home going up in flames.The woman, who has a four-month-old baby, said before leaving the house she was contemplating leaving the baby, since she was only going to the head of the road for a few minutes. Luckily, Hamilton said, she decided to take the baby as well as her other three-year-old son.Hamilton said she is at a loss as to what might have started the fire, since the house has no electricity.“Dis is a squatting area, we ain’t got no current in dis area. I didn’t cooking or nothing. I ain’t know how dis fire start,” Hamilton lamented.Despite the fact that the mother of five lost all her earthly possessions, she was very thankful to her neighbours.
