| Some one hundred students from Region Seven are expected to benefit from work study stints as the 2008 work study programme is expected to commence shortly.According to Regional Education Officer Mayfield Benjamin, this year’s exercise will target students from the Bartica Secondary School and the Waramadong Secondary School in Upper Mazaruni. Benjamin says that currently they are processing responses from the business entities in Bartica. However, she says that responses from most of the private entities are not favourable.“Most of the private businesses are a bit reluctant because of the financial obligations.” She added that she is pleased with the responses from the Government entities. These include the Bartica Hospital,Air Max 270 Sale, the Regional Democratic Office, the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Bartica exchange, and the Guyana Power and Light Company, Bartica Office, among others.The first phase of the programme is expected to start on July 8 and continue through August 9, while the second phase will start on August 11 and end in September. Each phase will see at least 50 students being placed on attachment.In the meantime, as the students prepare for their attachment, they are being prepared mentally for the working environment.Only last week the students from Waramadong Secondary School, who will be placed on attachment, participated in a ‘World of Works’ workshop. That workshop was held under the theme ‘Preparing students for the world of works and tertiary education’.A similar workshop is set for Thursday for the students of the Bartica Secondary School. The Region Four Education Department is preparing for its work study programme.According to District Education Officer, Secondary, Ms Baramda Seepersaud, so far they have managed to get a large number of entities on board.These include Caribbean Containers Limited, the Regional Democratic Offices, health centres, Ogle Aerodrome, Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri; and Demerara Distillers Limited. |
