| Gilford Daniels, on Wednesday, appeared before Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge of break and enter and larceny.The accused who was unrepresented pleaded guilty.Magistrate Octive-Hamilton was presiding over new matters due to the absence of Magistrate Priya Beharry.According to Corporal Venetta Pindar, on March 25, Daniels broke into the Herdmanston Hotel, Georgetown, and stole one electric toaster, a thermostat flask and a kettle. The items were the property of Michael George.When asked why he decided to commit such unlawful act, the accused stated that on the day in question after one of the doors to the premises was open he opt to enter. On entering, he took possession of the items mentioned in the charge but on doing so the security guard apprehended him. He was however dealt a sound beating.Daniels told the court that he is “regretful for his actions” and on the day of the incident he was intoxicated. He added that he has no intention of wasting the court’s time because he was caught.Pindar informed the court that the accused is a repeat offender. Without any hesitation, Daniels related that he was sentenced three times for offences of a similar nature but that he realized that he is getting older.It was for that reason that the magistrate said “You are getting older but yet you are not learning from your actions.”Daniels was then given a prison term of two years.But before being lead out of the courtroom, Magistrate Hamilton told him to take the two years to turn his life around.And Eon Howard, 33, called ‘Troy Heyliger’ was refused bail for allegedly robbing Susan Edwards of her (LG) cellular phone worth $47,000 and $3000 in local currency.The court was told that on March 24, at Stabroek Market, the accused robbed the plaintiff of the article mentioned in the charge.Corporal Venetta Pindar informed the said Magistrate that the accused has similar nature engaging the attention of the court. Pindar went on to explain that there has been an arrest warrant issued for him also.Howard, who is a labourer, stated that he resides at Lot 38 Walker Terrence, Georgetown. Magistrate Octive-Hamilton remanded him. The matter was made returnable for April 11. |
