The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) is without Legal Counsel following the surprise resignation of the company’s Legal Officer, Bibi Ali.Kaieteur News understands that Ali tendered her resignation yesterday, almost a month after her assistant, Frederick Singh, took similar action. This leaves the corporation in limbo as regards to legal representation on a number of issues.According to a source, the resignation of the company’s Legal Counsel was precipitated by the autocratic behaviour of a government official who has responsibility for the sugar corporation.Kaieteur News understands that about a month ago the government official had instructed the Legal Counsel and her assistant to report to the attorney general’s chambers, in a move that was viewed as making the position in the company redundant.Following the instruction, the assistant immediately tendered his resignation.GuySuCo’s Chief Executive Officer, Errol Hanoman, when contacted yesterday confirmed the resignations. He explained that Singh’s reason for resigning after his six-month period of probation was up, was that he was a young professional and wanted to practice law privately as opposed to working with a company.Hanoman did not explain Ali’s reason for quitting the job.The situation has serious implications for the sugar company which may be forced to incur millions of dollars in private legal fees should the need arise.“The actions of this senior government official come at a time when GuySuCo is in the midst of several problems that are seriously affecting the viability of the company,” the source said. GuySuCo accounts for 20 percent of Guyana’s Gross Domestic Product. It was pointed out that smaller companies have seen the wisdom in employing their own legal counsel and with GuySuCo facing many legal hurdles including illegal squatting on its land, there is a great need for a permanent legal counsel to coordinate the legal action that these will necessitate.Alli has been employed as GuySuCo’s Legal Counsel for the past five years.“These people were making a sacrifice because not many layers will want to work with a company for $200,000 per month when they could make much more in private practice. Just look at the shortage of magistrates and judges when there are so many attorneys in Guyana,Stitched NFL Jerseys,” the source said.
