Even before political parties officially launched their elections campaign, civil society made callsPPP General Secretary, Clement Roheefor the campaign to be focused on addressing issues rather than attacking personalities. However, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is stating that that is not what political rallies are for.As he hosted his Party’s weekly press conference at Freedom House yesterday, Rohee said that he has no intention to address issues and policies at those fora. It was pointed out that when Rohee addressed a rally at Kitty on Sunday, he spoke nothing about security in Guyana, even though he has been the Minister of Home Affairs for the past nine years.Rohee was asked if he will continue along this vein throughout the campaign season or if he has plans to, at some point, address the real issues affecting Guyana, especially in security. He was asked if he had intentions to boast about the things he did for security during his tenure. But he responded in the negative.He said that policies and issues are not to be dealt with at rallies; that the purpose of holding rallies is to energize supporters and remind them where to put their Xs come May 11 – the date of General and Regional Elections.Rohee added that when he takes the stage at any campaign it is in his capacity as General Secretary of the PPP and not as the Minister of Home Affairs, and he therefore holds no obligation to speak on issues. He said that all those who are interested in knowing what the PPP plans to do for Guyana and what the PPP has done for Guyana, can check the Party’s manifesto. Rohee charged the crowd to “put the final nail in the coffin” on May, 11 when the nation goes to the polls to elect a government.Rohee told the gathering that the Party remains a fighting party. He likened the PPP to a scorpion and said that everyone knows what is likely to happen to a person who is unfortunate enough to be stung by a scorpion.With that, the politician stretched his arms open, leaned to the side and belted out “A scorpion bite meh, I think like ah gone dead,” stealing a few words from a popular song.When Rohee was finished with his rendition, he told supporters that when the metaphoric scorpion stings the APNU+AFC coalition, it will die.“Scraven, lickrish and hungish” is how Rohee described the Opposition, saying that, “they took everything for themselves.”Also, he told the crowd that APNU and the AFC were working together all the while and during the life of the Tenth Parliament strengthened their relationship.“There is a Wedding Expo in Duke Street that is going on now; I thought I would have seen the Opposition there.”He said, APNU+AFC Presidential hopeful, David Granger, was “tackling” Moses Nagamootoo during Parliament. “Dey de hustling one another…all ah we got on red, but this is PPP red, not Valentine red.”Rohee said that the “marriage” happen but with “canta” (fake) ring.As he alluded to the fact that the APNU+AFC coalition officially launched its election campaign at Pegasus Hotel, Rohee told his supporters that it was there that Granger and Nagamootoo consummated the marriage.The politician then told the crowd that the time for chances is over as “this country went through too many experiments.”Rohee told supporters that the Opposition is asking for the PPP to give up, but “hell no.”But the man who is responsible for the nation’s security spoke nothing about his record of overseeing a sector that has been the centre of criticism in recent years.
