A taxi driver was shot and killed during an early morning home invasion, yesterday at La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, (WBD).The victim, who has been identified as Dennis Narine, 26,Cheap Nike Shox, of Lot 598 La Parfaite Harmonie, WBD sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was later pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional hospital.Police in statement said that at about 2:00am yesterday, Narine was fast asleep with his wife and three children when he was aroused by noise at a glass window at his home. He went to make checks during which shots were discharged at him through the window.Shot dead: Dennis NarineKaieteur News understands that after he was awoken, the man had quietly alerted his wife to take his three sleeping children to safety, away from the window. Narine had reportedly armed himself with a cutlass in an attempt to protect his family as he sought to investigate the noise outside his house. When this newspaper visited his home yesterday, the dead man’s aggrieved wife was surrounded by other relatives and friends who sought to console her. She was unable to relate the events which led to her husband’s demise. However, the victim’s mother Bibi Shamina Khan who lives a few houses away, spoke with reporters. She recalled that at around 2:00 am Sunday morning, she was awoken by the sound of gun shots and what sounded like her daughter -in-law’s screams.Khan said that realizing that the noise was coming from her eldest son’s residence, she waited a few minutes and then rushed over to check on the family.“I found my son in blood with a hole (wound) to his left side stomach. I picked him up and tried to talk to him and ask him what happened to him but he could not say anything. He just like take a deep breath and that was it, “an emotional Khan recounted. The grieving woman said that her son was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, (WDRH) where he was officially pronounced dead. This window (arrow indicated) was damaged when Dennis Narine was shot and killed yesterday. While information relating to a motive of the shooting remain unclear, Narine‘s mother ruled out the theory that someone might have carried out a ‘hit’ on her son. She believes that the incident amounts to nothing more than a botched burglary.“My son was a good man. Find out from anybody. He ain’t got no problem with people. He is a very peaceful person. Ask people, he ain’t got problems with people,” the woman said.Mrs. Khan however, recalled that her son had received a threat from someone after his car was broken into a few weeks back.“About two months back, somebody break he windscreen but he made a complaint to the Community Policing Group about it then somebody left a threatening message at the base that he does work taxi, but he ain’t know the person. The person left the message and he just drop the story because he didn’t want trouble with people.”Some of the dead man’s relatives, friends and neighbours also gathered at his mother’s home, expressing shock and disbelief at the news.  But the shooting brought another issue that has been plaguing the community for some time to the forefront; a surging amount of robberies and gun-related crimes. One neighbour lamented the fact that a police outpost is desperately needed in the area.  The resident noted that the lack of security in the neighbourhood is constantly highlighted but is not being addressed.“Do you know how many robberies occur here daily? And we have just a few police who would ride around the area in the daytime and that’s it. We need much more police presence because this is one of the country’s biggest housing development projects and it does not have a police outpost.”“We need a police outpost and more active patrols especially at nights because these bandits have guns and I am not sure where they are getting it from but it is making the place unsafe,” the resident lamented. He noted that not just robberies but vandalism and other illegal activities have become prevalent in the area “that even the simple girl selling water get robbed of her daily earnings.”“People’s properties are being stripped and the bandits are fetching out during the night time,” the man said, adding that the incidences are making it hard for persons in the area to rest peacefully at nights knowing that their properties and lives are at risk.
