Softening its stand on the declaration of the extent of eco sensitive zones around national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and other protected areas, the Environment Ministry has indicated its willingness to give a free hand to the states in deciding "development" in the ESZs.
In a U turn from its earlier position of examining each protected area on a case to case basis, the ministry has said it is ready to accommodate the recommendations of states while notifying the extent of eco sensitive zones (ESZs).
As per a ministry notification, a prior permission of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) is mandatory for any activity within 10km of a national park, wildlife sanctuary or protected area.

In February last year, the ministry had asked the states to submit the proposals of their protected areas for final notification of the ESZs.

"We have been asked to be considerate in accepting states' proposals on their eco sensitive zones and not look too much into them. The 10 km buffer is not feasible in many cases, and other factors like urbanization and the size of sanctuary are considered while fixing the eco sensitive extent," a senior wildlife official in the ministry, said.
Sources in the ministry said they have been asked to fast track cases pertaining to eco sensitive zones and accept states' proposals in entirety.
The new government is expected to accept the demands of states like Chhattisgarh and Goa to allow them to carry out mining and set up power plants (in case of the former) by reducing the extent of buffer zones around their protected areas.
