"It could have taken out the entire structure and damaged adjacent structures," said Jersey City Police Chief Tom Comey of the device allegedly planted by Milan Bolich Jr., 54, in the three story apartment building where he lives at Palisade Avenue and Griffith Street.
Bolich was charged last night with attempted aggravated arson, risking widespread injury, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, said Sgt. Michael Gajewski. after getting a call from Bolich saying he smelled gas on the first floor, which until two weeks ago was occupied by Willy Joe's Pizzeria, officials said.
He took police into the building through the door leading to the upstairs apartments and when police entered the pizzeria through the rear, no gas was escaping but the smell of gas lingered as if it had recently been turned off, Comey said. The officers took a look and immediately evacuated a one block area, called the bomb squad and notified the federal ATF.
There was a plastic jug containing gasoline, diesel fuel and paint thinner, and a wire running from the container into a ceiling light fixture, police said.

Bolich is expected to make his first appearance on the charges in Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City this morning, and police said he is likely to face additional charges by then.
