Residents of the Somerset neighborhood were given an early glimpse of the Ames school district's plans for a vacant piece of property on 24th Street during a meeting on Monday.
The district aims to build new administration offices at the site, as well as a facilities maintenance building, high school softball and baseball fields; public restrooms and concessions. Other concepts being proposed include tennis courts, a cross country track and a walking path.
Representatives from Haila Architecture, the firm chosen to design the project, were peppered with questions about the project Monday during a community meeting at Ames High School, where district officials were also on hand to gather input as their plans start to take shape.
The architectural Tiffany & Co Sydney firm's president, John Buy Roshe Runs Online Haila, stressed the need for feedback from residents, whose neighborhood borders the rectangular shaped property to the west.
"We really want your input tonight, we're not here to sell you anything," Haila said. "We are in the extremely early phases of the design process, we don't have anything solidified yet."
A group of nearly 20 residents attended the meeting, where questions ranged from how many parking spots the site will hold, to whether or not the district buildings will be designed to adhere to the same aesthetic standards upheld by the residents of the Somerset neighborhood. Residents also questioned how far the new buildings will be from their homes, and more than once, they asked about the need to include a facilities maintenance building as part of the plans for the site.
In a conceptual drawing of what the property might look like once its developed, both the administration and maintenance building were shown on the south end of the property, along 24th Street. The maintenance building was the larger of the two and in the east corner, while the administration building was to the west.
Somerset resident Matt Loecke was first to question the need for both buildings at the site, and he asked how significant the operating benefits would be considering all that was in store for the property.
"It just looks like there's going to be a lot on the site," Loecke said.
The school board voted last December to recommend moving the district's administration center and the maintenance building to the 24th Street property. The decision was the culmination of a prolonged debate about the future location of the two facilities, which are now several miles apart.
District administrators have been housed in an 80 year old building on Stanton Avenue in Campustown for more than a decade. They moved into the building after it was renovated for office use in 2000.
Amid questions Monday about placing both the administration and facilities maintenance building at the 24th Street development, a project estimated to cost around $13 million, district superintendent Tim Taylor told Somerset residents he would make note of their concerns when he reports back to the school board.
District officials have treaded carefully with neighbors of the property Ghd Hair Brisbane and previously had parent volunteers Buy Ghd Australia go door to Cheap Ghd Australia Sale door to discuss the project and gauge any concerns.
Among potential issues the district has preemptively tried to address is with the athletic fields, and the possibility of whether evening sports activities will mean bright lights shining into backyards. An evaluation by the Iowa based company Musco Lighting found that won't be a problem, Taylor has said.
As for the aesthetic concerns raised at Monday's meeting, Haila Architecture emphasized that they were still early enough in the process that decisions had not been made on any particular design or look.
The firm has been hired to carry the project through to the preliminary design phase and plans to present their concept, as well as a Nike Air Max Thea Australia preliminary cost estimate, to the school board in February.
Sam Stagg, an architect with the firm, was clear that Air Jordans Sydney it would be "nearly impossible" to translate Somerset's residential design standards to the district buildings. Stagg said this is one of the biggest challenges the project presented, designing buildings that fit in with the residential neighborhood.
"There will likely not be a direct translation of the Somerset aesthetic," said Stagg, who went on to assure residents. "We're going to go to great lengths to make sure the buildings look great."
Jake Talbott, president of the Somerset Property Owner's Association, helped moved the conversation along when he noted that there were both residential codes and commercial codes when it comes to building, and the district facilities would likely fall under the latter.
