A watchman was allegedly busted by ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) for selling marijuana while on duty at a Pharmacy.According to the allegations, Rajindra Rowtie, 29, of Lot 188 D’Andrade Street, Newtown, had in his possession in excess of 15 grams of cannabis while on duty at Medicare Pharmacy at Hinck Street, Georgetown, on September, 16, 2013.Rowtie pleaded not guilty to the drug possession charge when he faced Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.CANU Special Prosecutor Oswald Massiah said the defendant can be classified as a watchman working with Medicare Pharmacy.“On September 16, 2013, CANU ranks, acting upon information, were on a lookout at Hinck Street, Georgetown, when they detected persons going back and forth from a guard hut, where the defendant was on duty.”Officers closed in on the defendant and conducted a search on the hut. The officers found two calabashes, which contained transparent bags of leaves,Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis. The ranks later unearthed another Ziploc bag concealed in the calabash.The police later found G$80,000 and US$110 on the defendant’s person after a further search was conducted. The money was confiscated as suspected proceeds from the narcotics sales.Massiah told the court that Rowtie was evasive and non cooperative with the police, when questioned about his whereabouts.“The defendant took ranks to Lot 188 D’Andrade Street, Newtown, as the place where he lives, but his parents told the officers that their son no longer lives there, he had moved. He resides at an address in South, hence he was held in custody.”Attorney at Law Latchmie Rahamat made an application for bail. She reassured the court that her client has a fixed place of abode at Lot 188 D’andrade Street, Newtown, and is employed as a security guard at Medicare Pharmacy.Rahamat argued that the hut, where the alleged narcotics had been found was accessible and at times occupied by two other security officers, on a shift system.She told the court that her client has had no previous convictions or pending matters.The prosecution however objected to bail on the grounds that Rowtie may flee the jurisdiction if granted pre-trial liberty.The Chief Magistrate remanded the defendant to prison until today. |
