| An East Bank Demerara property which saw rates increased by 300 per cent will not have to pay since it is unauthorised.Minister of Local Government,NBA Jerseys From China, Kellawan Lall, warned on Friday that he had not authorised any increase in the rates on properties in the Good Success/Caledonia Neighbourhood Council.According to Lall, his Ministry received several complaints from irate property owners who claimed that the NDC has increased the rates for 2010 well above what they were last year. The Minister said that his people are currently assessing each NDC’s financial status and its ability to collect rates and arrears. For an NDC to increase rates, it must first apply to the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, giving reasons and submitting estimated to justify the increased being applied for.“It is the Minister who authorises increases. So far no NDC has been authorised to increase rates.” One complaint reaching the Ministry claimed that the NDC in the Good Success/Caledonia NDC increased its rates by 300 per cent this year.NDCs across the country, facing Local Government Elections in a few months after years without one, have been plagued mainly by low collections.Attempts to increase this substantially have been rebuffed by Government time and time again, which instead urged the NDCs to improve collection rates. |
