| Two men who were previously partners in crime and were recently involved in a fracas at the New Amsterdam prison on April 30, last, have both pleaded guilty to a charge of robbery under arms. During the fight in jail one inmate split the other’s skull.On Tuesday they were each sentenced to two years in jail when they reappeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court before Magistrate’s Adela Nagamootoo.The men, Chris Rampersaud and Desmond Isaacs, 22, of no fixed place of abode were accused of a robbery committed Sunday September 12, last year.The victim was Edward Taylor at Alexander Street in New Amsterdam. They had both pleaded guilty in an earlier appearance and were required to return to court for sentencing.Taylor was robbed of one gold chain valued $250,000; one cell phone and $30,000 in cash after the men jumped over a fence and accosted the unsuspecting man.They dealt him several lashes about his body and head after he resisted before relieving him of his belongings and making good their escape.The men were subsequently arrested and placed in custody. They had both pleaded not guilty.In court, Isaacs had maintained his not guilty plea. Rampersaud,Wholesale Jerseys, when it was his turn, changed his plea to guilty. He told the magistrate that he is innocent of the crime, but that he is presently serving a two-year sentence and would like “a small thing to work into this one”.The magistrate then told him that she would enter a not guilty plea for him to which he stated that he would stay with the guilty plea, but was still begging for “a small thing”. Upon hearing that, Isaacs decided to change his plea to guilty, stating that he was wasting time on remand.Rampersaud had eluded capture and was sentenced in absentia on another matter. He was later arrested some time later in Georgetown.Isaacs had injured Rampersaud during a fight between the two at the New Amsterdam prison.The fracas occurred during the unlocking period in which the prisoners are allowed time to do house-cleaning. It was reported that Isaacs accosted his one time buddy and wounded him on the head with a piece of iron.During the melee prison officer Tony Lewis rushed to part the fight and was injured on the left arm. |
