Prison escapee Sherwin Bobb was hospitalised under police guard yesterday evening after ingesting poison as police and prison officials were closing in on him.Director of Prisons Dale Erskine told Kaieteur News that Bobb was nabbed at a relative’s Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo home. The relative was not detained.Erskine said that police and prison officials, acting on information visited the location at around 18:30 hrs yesterday, where they spotted the fugitive. However, just as they were about to arrest Bobb, the escapee reportedly ingested a poisonous substance.“He took something from one of his pockets and swallowed it,” Erskine said.Recaptured: Sherwin BobbThe escapee was subsequently taken to a hospital.Bobb, who was reportedly on remand for drug possession, escaped from the Georgetown Prison in late June by scaling the razor wire-topped prison fence.According to reports, the inmate had just returned to his normal holding area near the tailor shop after seeing a visitor at the front gate when he scaled the fence at the eastern section of the prison.Kaieteur News understands that the prisoner may have been motivated to escape after being told by other inmates that the woman with whom he had been living had started another relationship.Police confirmed that shortly after escaping, the fugitive travelled to Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara and collected his two children from a house in the community. Bobb reportedly then took the children by car to a house in Leopold Street, where he left them. |
