A 12-year-old Friendship Secondary School boy is battling for his life at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after he was struck down by a speeding biker.Critical: Jonathan AshbyThe accident occurred around 11:45 hrs yesterday, a short distance from his school on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) Public Road.The injured teenager has been identified as Jonathan Ashby, of Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD).Reports are that the 12-year-old boy was standing on the EBD Public Road when he was struck down by the biker.The biker, according to information received, claimed that the teenager and his friends were playing on the roadway when one of the teen’s friends suddenly pushed him out on the road—this caused him to strike down the teen. He is now in custody assisting with the investigation.Meanwhile, at the hospital yesterday, the teen’s uncle, Derrick Spencer, said that the doctor informed family members that Ashby’s condition is critical.“We heard that he was with some friends and someone on a bike hit him down,” the man said. He claimed that the teen was first rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre then transferred to the GPHC.Kaieteur News was told that when an unconscious Ashby arrived at the GPHC on a stretcher, he had to wait some two hours before he was taken into the Accident and Emergency unit to be seen by a doctor.“It was only after my aunt started to behave bad on them then they took him into the room. The people at the triage area said that he has to wait his turn. He is now breathing from a machine,” a female relative said.Investigations are ongoing. |
