ROSE HALL,Deion Jones Falcons Jersey, EAST CANJE – A staff member of the New Amsterdam Berbice National Communications Network, 23-year-old Mukeshwar Sewlall, of Gangaram Settlement, East Canje, was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam Hospital on Sunday. He had been involved in an accident on the East Canje Public Road.Dead: Mukeshwar SewlallSewlall was said to be riding his motorcycle to his place of employment at about 22:30 hours to work the night shift. He was with pillion rider, 23-year- old Latchman Singh of Canefield, East Canje.In the vicinity of the Rose Hall Estate Staff Compound, a pick-up, PHH 1025, which was heading in the opposite direction allegedly swerved across the road and struck Mukeshwar Sewlall and his pillion rider. The two cyclists were subsequently transported to the New Amsterdam Hospital. Singh was admitted then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he underwent surgery yesterday and is said to be in a stable condition.The vehicle ended up in the nearby canal.The Police further reported that the driver of the vehicle, 28-year-old Arnold Sewpersaud of Third Street, Saw Mill Dam in Rosignol escaped from the scene of the accident. He was later arrested at the Fort Wellington Hospital, West Berbice.According to police reports, a rank from the Fort Wellington Police Station headed down to the Fort Wellington Hospital about 10:30 hours yesterday and found Arnold Sewpersaud who was reportedly admitted 12 hours after the accident by a doctor (name given) but was reportedly never questioned by the said doctor as to how he sustained his injuries.Sewpersaud has no visible marks but is said to be complaining of pains in the neck.Station Co-ordinator of the National Communication Network’s Berbice Operation, Faizal Jaffarally, said that Mukeshwar Sewlall began working there three years ago as a transmission operator.On Sunday, he was expected to work the midnight to 08:00 hours shift. “He was in his lane when the accident took place. When people heard the impact and went out, they said the occupants of the vehicle went away, they fled the scene”.“When the police arrived and took out the vehicle from the trench there was evidence that they (occupants of the vehicle) were drinking. There were beer bottles, rum bottles, food boxes and so. Later we learnt that the vehicle belongs to one ‘Buck Man’ who operates a pharmacy and general store at Rosignol.”Mr. Jaffarally described Mukeshwar Sewlall as a friend and brother who was hard working, intelligent and a competent operator.“He would respond to duty at the shortest possible notice, he would never say he cannot come. Mukeshwar is the kind of worker that any employer would want. He was awarded the Worker of the Year for 2009 for NCN Berbice Operations.”The Chief Executive Officer of the National Communication Network, Mohamed Sattaur and Mr. Jaffarally visited the family yesterday. NCN is providing all assistance to the family, including a vigil which would be held tonight (Tuesday) at 19:00 hours at the NCN compound.Mukeshwar Sewlall was the youngest of three children and leaves to mourn his reputed wife and parents.
