Three USC football starters, certainly one of whom allegedly took a lot of money from a sports agent, have been declared ineligible by the university Mon, although the school hopes to gradually return them to the playing field.
USC authorities took the action after the NCAA and Pacific 10 Conference investigation into the affairs of Shawn Walters, the leading rusher the last two seasons, defensive end Israel Ifeanyi and linebacker Errick Herrin.
These were shown to be linked to Robert Troy Caron, a representative who allegedly paid institution athletes to secure these people as clients when they switched professional. Caron owns Pro Control Barbour Singapore of Oxnard.
The investigation also prolonged to UCLA and three some other Pac 10 schools.
At UCLA, elderly linebacker Donnie Edwards will meet Wednesday with Pac 10 officials regarding allegations which he accepted $150 in food via Caron, Edwards said. Athletic Director Peter Dalis and Edwards said they are positive the defensive star will likely be cleared of any wrongdoing.
USC will now get restoration of its three players' membership through the NCAA eligibility committee, reported Robert Lane, university basic counsel.
Generally, repayment with the benefit is the first issue of restoration. In some instances, this NCAA will allow an athlete to make restitution on the time schedule before his / her eligibility expires.
According to documents obtained by The Times, Walters, the junior, has been given $15,700 by Caron since last year. A lot of the money was delivered by an intermediary, Melvin Nunnery, who lived with Walters. Nunnery is a former USC student who one time tried out for the football team.
Lane said not all the repayments on a ledger were made for you to or for Walters. Lane also claimed Walters said he did not know Nunnery worked for an agent.
"We're trying to figure out to what extent and just what amount were made to or on behalf of Shawn Walters," he said.
Before the school can determine of which, Lane said it was impossible to guess how much Walters must repay.
"It won't be $16,000," he said.
Walters' version of events might be challenged because, according to NCAA rules, he should have questioned where money was coming from in the event that he did not know.
Furthermore, solutions familiar with Pro Manage explained to The Times that Walters was often seen at the Oxnard office along with Caron.
Ifeanyi and Herrin allegedly received pagers through the agent as well as some other little items. Although their settlement is not expected to be almost the amount of Walters', they are facing other conditions, sources said.
"It's a matter of looking to understand all the facts," Lane said.
Under NCAA rules, a higher athlete can lose her or his eligibility if found to get accepted money or other favours from an agent. But in most examples involving agents, the school is not affected by the violations except the NCAA enforcement staff policies that the institution knew, or maybe should have known, about the occurrence.
USC Athletic Director Mike Garrett stated the school is not worried that it'll have to forfeit any online games because of the situation. The fifth scored Trojans, 4 0 general and 2 0 in the Pac 13, play California on Weekend.
In other cases involving Pac 10 players allegedly connected to Caron, Arizona, Iz and Oregon State have supported their athletes with reporting to conference authorities.
"We deemed them to be eligible," Arizona Athletic Director Jim Livengood said of Tedy Bruschi and Richard Dice. "Everything we found had been true and consistent with what are the kids told us. We aren't going to put these little ones or our university in danger. . . . I think it is resolved. In .
But both players were on a Pro Manage telephone list, obtained by The Occasions, with the three USC players and others around the country. Sources pointed out every player on the list got something.
Cal Athletic Representative John Kasser said he located no wrongdoing by senior huge receiver Iheanyi Uwaezuoke.
"His name is on the phone list and there is nothing at all to it," Kasser said.
Guy changes State reported it reinforced Reggie Tongue's explanation that he is not related to Caron. Tongue also was on the market, which one of Caron's intermediaries in North Carolina described as a wish collection.
